Booster programme accelerated and how to get boosters and tests

England entered Plan B Covid-19 measures on 10 December, in an effort to ‘slow the spread’ of the Omicron variant, and ‘get more boosters in arms’, the Prime Minister has said. The Prime Minister announced on Sunday 12 December with an urgent Omicron appeal, that the booster programme is being accelerated, with ‘Get Boosted’ campaign, after the Omicron alert level was increased from Level 3 to Level 4.

New guidance includes:

  • Face masks are mandatory in most public settings, including theatres and cinemas – but not bars and restaurants, starting on 10 December.
  • People should work from home if they can, for a ‘limited period’
  • Wednesday 15 December: Nightclubs and other large venues will require proof of Covid-19 vaccination of at least two doses from 15 December, using the NHS Covid Pass on the NHS App.
  • Wednesday 15 December: all over 18s are eligible for the booster jab and will be able to book an appointment or walk in to a clinic.
  • Daily lateral flow tests for seven days for those who come into contact with Covid-19 positive person, instead of the 10-day self-isolation period.
    Order a lateral flow test

For Lateral Flow tests, it is advised to order online. Pharmacies are running low on lateral flow tests or are out of stock. The best way of guaranteeing you get a pack, is to order online to get delivered to your home. When you order you can receive a code to use and show in any pharmacy if you wish, however stocks are low. Order from for home delivery.

These regulations will be reviewed in three weeks, and set to expire six weeks after implementation.

Booster programme

The booster programme, with the National Booking Service is now open to all those aged over 40 to book their jabs. The dose interval has also been shortened from six months to three months, with those eligible now able to book a month in advance – two months after their second dose. The boooster programme will open up to 18-29 year olds from Wednesday 10 December. You can book an appointment or find a walk-in clinic.

Most people can:

  • book a vaccination appointment online for an appointment at a vaccination centre or pharmacy
  • go to a walk-in vaccination site to get vaccinated without needing an appointment
  • wait to be contacted by a local NHS service such as a GP surgery and book an appointment with them.
